Recording the screen, while playing a game, makes it possible to show off your skills to your friends. When running a DirextX or OpenGL application, you need a special recorder, otherwise your computer will run slower or the software will not record anything except for a blank screen. Dxtory will use your hardware in a more efficient manner and it places various features at your disposal. You can make numerous configurations and adjustments to create a high quality recording or one that will take up less space and use less resources.

You can try the software, for a limited period of time, after which you need to buy a license. The setup process is fast and you will not have to go through advanced settings along the way. Dxtory can run on Windows XP, Vista or Win 7, 32 or 64-bit versions. The system requirements are not high, but you need to install .NET Framework 4.0, otherwise the application will not work.

You can start recording, taking screenshots and executing other actions with shortcut keys, while the application is running. Configuration options for screenshots, video and sound recording are found under separate tabs. The video recording can be saved in .avi or .rawcap format. You can choose one of these formats under the Movie tab, where you may also select a video codec and a frame rate, set a different scaling, add and adjust margins and more.

The application will detect your installed video and audio codecs automatically, making it possible to select them immediately from a drop menu or a list. Dxtory is quite flexible when it comes to screenshots as well. You can select a format, like JPEG, PNG, TGA or BMP, set a quality level, change the scaling of the images or add margins. Dxtory is capable of taking high speed screenshots continuously, for a limited or unlimited number of times and repeat the process automatically on a given time interval.

Additional options for video recording can be found under different navigation tabs. Dxtory can display information, such as the video's frame rate, recording status and more, while running a DirextX/OpenGL application. It is also possible to save the recording in multiple folders at once. All you have to do is add them to a list, under the Folder tab and click their check boxes. The program includes a few utilities for converting .rawcap files to .avi, fixing .avi files, changing their codec settings and more. You can launch them by clicking a series of icons, located on the lower edge of the interface. Their options are displayed on separate windows and they are not difficult to use.

Pros

Dxtory lets you make numerous configurations before recording a DirextX/OpenGL application. It is capable of recording in standard AVI format or in RAWCAP. The options are very well organized and they are easy to understand.

Cons

The free trial version has a few limitations and it will place a watermark on your recordings. Speed and quality is what Dxtory has to offer, when recording a game or other similar applications. Its flexibility and ease of use make it an excellent choice for this task.
